Chapman puts in $46 million offer for Crystal Cathedral

GARDEN GROVE – Chapman University submitted a proposal Tuesday to buy the financially ailing Crystal Cathedral’s property in Garden Grove for $46 million for a satellite campus offering health science programs.

The proposal comes two days after reports that Crystal Cathedral founder Robert H. Schuller was ousted from the church’s board.

Chapman University has made a $46 million offer to purchase the Crystal Cathedral property in Garden Grove.
The university filed its proposal in bankruptcy court Tuesday. Chapman University’s Board of Trustees authorized the proposal to buy the megachurch during its June 27 meeting, said President Jim Doti.

Chapman’s plan is to house its new Health Science programs on the church’s property, which is about 10 minutes away from the main campus, Doti said.

“We’re looking at embarking into … programs such as dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacology – programs for which there is a growing need in Orange County,” he said.

The church has already received a $46-million purchase offer from Irvine-based Greenlaw Partners LLC, which has proposed to buy the core buildings and then give the church the option to lease the buildings and buy the properties back for $30 million in four years. In exchange, the developer would be able to build hundreds of apartment units in a portion of the 30-acre campus.

Chapman University has not specifically stated what they will do with the property, but Doti said in a statement that the university is “fortunate to be in a position where we can make this offer.”

“Dr. Schuller’s lifelong message of courage and ambition closely matches the characteristics that are so much a part of Chapman University,” he said. “We are hopeful our proposal to the ministry and court will be accepted.”

Chapman’s proposal will also allow the cathedral to lease back the core buildings with a purchase provision that could be exercised during the first four years of the lease.

The Crystal Cathedral’s financial travails culminated in its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last October.

More to come.
